glabrous perennial with erect, nearly smooth, trigonous stems 10-60 cm high, growing from a shortly creeping base.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is a rather common plant in damp places on moors, pastures and mountains throughout the British Isles though very rare in the south-east.

Fleurs : épis mâles 1-2, linéaires-oblongs, bruns-pâles ; 2-3 épis femelles écartés, ovoïdes-oblongs (10-15 mm), denses, dressés, l'inférieur pédonculé; bractées engainantes, foliacées, plus courtes que la tige; écailles brunes bordées de blanc, ovales-aiguës; 3 stigmates;

Fruit: 5.5 x 2.7 mm, smooth, flask shaped, with two prominent ribs and many other intervening veins, and suddenly narrowed into a long, rough-edged, bifid beak. Nut 2.5 x 2.0 mm, obovate, trigonous, narrowed below, shortly beaked.
